Objections, revisions, and intellectual patience

A striking feature of philosophical method is the role of objection. In many fields an objection can be treated as a nuisance to be brushed aside rhetorically. In philosophy the objection is often where real progress begins. A good philosopher does not merely defend a thesis; he asks what the strongest objection would be, whether the objection changes the thesis, and which revision preserves the original insight without collapsing into contradiction. That patience explains why philosophical literature often advances by refinement rather than dramatic replacement.
